Training the Next Generation of Tournament Officials

Flag Football Tournament Referees Association prepares referees for speed, pressure, and professionalism required in competitive flag football tournaments. Our mission is to develop confident, consistent officials who can perform at a high level in fast-paced tournament environments.

Built for Tournament Play — Not Just League Games

Tournament football is different. It’s faster, more intense, and demands sharper decision-making than traditional league play. At FFTRA, we don’t just train referees—we prepare them specifically for tournament environments.

Our training emphasizes consistency, communication, and control so every official is ready to manage games professionally from start to finish.

What We Train

Tournament Rules

Officials are trained to understand the differences between tournament formats and rule sets. This includes adapting to pool play, bracket play, time constraints, and variations across different organizations.

Positioning & Mechanics

We teach proper positioning and movement to ensure referees are always in the best place to make accurate calls. Training includes both 2-man and 3-man mechanics used in tournament settings.

Game Management

Officials learn how to control the pace of the game, communicate effectively with players and coaches, and maintain professionalism under pressure.

Conflict Resolution

Tournament environments can be intense. We train referees to handle disputes, de-escalate situations, and maintain authority without disrupting the flow of the game.

Communication & Confidence

Clear communication is critical. Our officials are trained to make strong, confident calls and communicate clearly with teams, coaches, and fellow referees.

How Training Works

FFTRA uses a structured development system to prepare officials for real tournament action:

  • In-person and online training clinics
  • On-field evaluations
  • Mentorship from experienced officials
  • Real-game exposure and feedback

Officials are continuously evaluated and developed to ensure they meet FFTRA standards.

The FFTRA Standard

Every FFTRA official is expected to meet a high standard of performance:

  • Consistent and accurate calls
